Default Steering wheel insert modification

Has anyone done any customization work (please don't show me Curtiss's calculator picture ) to their steering wheel center? I was doing some designing in my head for my interior modifications and I keep coming around to mounting my little rectangular GPS unit/backup camera/MP3 player in the center of the wheel.
  1. Front and center where it is most accessible
  2. Unused space due to horn being on stem
  3. Much less glare than anywhere on dash or console
  4. Close enough for old eyes to see it clearly!
Of course, the challenge of supply it with power, video in and audio out cables is greater because of the fact that they plug into its side not back and because of the wheel spin. I think the latter can be solved by pigtailing and the former can be solved by not surface mounting the unit but by embedding it. The GPS is rectangular, about 4" x 3" x 1/2". Inputs on left side, but on/off button on top side. Anyone got a torn steering center they are willing to part with for some prototype work? (I seem to be asking that a lot lately! lolol)

Has anyone done anything like this? Pictures? Thanks.

intresting, should be real nice if you pull it off cleanly. personally ive never fancied anything in the steering wheel, a properly embossed enblem would do it along with a horn button.

For the power you could use a 1/4" mono connection (as used in audio applications and "guitar cables") mounted directly in the center. It will swivel until the cows come home.

those can wear as the chrome plating usually isnt very thick, maybe high end ones would last, good idea.
