View Full Version : saving screen shots
Anybody know of an easy way to save screen shots? Currently I press Ctrl+Print Screen, open Photoshop, then file/new, edit and finally paste.
There's got to be an easier way. Also, I'd rather not download and install another program for this.
TIA

I hit print screen and then paste in photoshop. Photoshop starting up is the PITA for me, it can take forever with CS2.
I just did a quick search and there are a bunch of utilities out there for making them quickly.
Yeah, I was just hoping that there was something built into windows that I didn't know about.

I just hit "Print Screen" and pasted it into Paint.
Paint does load faster than photoshop. I guess I'll start doing that.
Too bad there's no key sequence you could just do. Like press Ctrl and Print Screen, then enter and you have a file on your desktop. Now that would be fast and easy.

Does paint save as Jpegs? The only reason I use Photoshop is to make the image smaller, crop it and save it for web.

Get Hyper Snap. Works like a charm.
the simple image viewer acdsee classic lets you crop images down for the web. Used with paint, it is the fastest sceencap or thumbnail maker.
Least for me.

Mark, what is your avatar doing? It looks all messed up on my screen.
So command-shift 3 gives you a file on your desktop on Mac?
Not that I'd switch to Mac for that though.

Looks fine here. Just a Santa messin' around with a girl.
Edit.. looks like the girl is actually farting in Santa's face. :chair:

Santa lifting her skirt. Some reason my GIF's dont always work on this site.

Yep it makes a PDF file on my desktop. I open with Preview (Mac photo viewer) and convert to JPEG. Takes about 10 seconds.

Try to resize on your computer first and then upload. Instead of letting the forum software resize. See if that helps.

Dont know how to do that resizing thing. The Santa one is only 12kb and I stole it off someone else's Avatar.

ive always hit print screen and paste into paint. ive always thought this was very fast and works well and you can save as jpeg if you want.

Dimensions also need to be within 100x100.
It's best to resize the dimensions and file size on your own computer. Then the avatar image should not be altered once uploaded.

There use to be a hack where you could change the default PDF into what ever file you like (e.g. JPEGs, TIFs etc). It stopped working after upgrading to OSX2 and I never bothered to check how to do it on the new system.
Here are some other options available for screenshots on a Mac:
Command-Shift-3
Create a picture file of the entire screen.
Command-Shift-4
Create a picture file of a rectangular section of the screen. (After pressing and releasing the key combination, drag across the part of the screen you want to take a picture of.)
Command-Shift-Caps Lock-4
Create a picture file of a window. (After pressing and releasing the key combination, click the window you want to take a picture of.)
Command-Shift-4-Space
Same as above but slightly different.

One to stow away in the FWIW department...

For those running on OSX.4 and above and want to change the default format of your screen shots here's how you go about it courtesy of Mac | Life Magazine (formerly Mac Addict Magazine)...
The geeky way. Open Terminal, type in the following: defaults write com.apple.screencapture type
-string TIFF and hit the Return key. Now log out and log back in. Henceforth your screenshots will come out as TIFF files. Use JPEG, PDF, BMP, or PICT in place of TIFF if desired.
The easy way. Download OnyX (free, www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html), Cocktail ($14.95, www.maintain.se/cocktail), or TinkerTool (free, www.bresink.de/osx/TinkerTool.html) – each of these powerful utilities provides a simple pull-down menu for changing the default screenshot format.

I just hit "Print Screen" and pasted it into Paint.
Same here. Then a quick edit in paint.
One thing I like about paint is that you can edit at the pixal level.
